OCTOBER'S BRIGHT BLUE WEATHER

I love October! It's my favorite month of the year, Autumn is my favorite season. (Even though I do get homesick for New England every Fall.)

(T made a wonderfully poetic post about Autumn in our blog...and the comment added just delighted me!)

If you have difficulty reading this newsletter, it is posted online at

Cut to the chase - This newsletter contains:

  • Back in stock items: Baby Bottom Balm and Shea Soufflé. (It is finally cool enough to ship them!)
  • Back in stock, revised or reintroduced items: Our Baby Shower gift set, Satin soles spa set, revised and expanded Woodlovers Sampler.
  • Back in stock:  Lavender Mailette Hydrosol - certified organic from the US, and beautifully aromatic
  • NEW skincare products:  Clarifying toner/astringent for oily, combination or problem skin
  • NEW Synergies:  Happy Morning - designed to ease morning sickness and other forms of nausea, and, at long last, Magdalene's Anoint. (We've been asked to produce a "Mary Magdalene Oil" and some serendipitous events finally came together for us to produce it.  For forgiveness, and self-forgiveness.
  • Small Size Sale: Some oils we only offer in 15 mls - poured in 5 ml sizes for your sampling and experimentation.
  • SPECIAL Trick or Treat Sale:  save 5 to 15 % - read more below - only for newsletter readers.
  • Continuing sale on Autumn Sunshine (how could we not offer this on this gloriously sunny October morning!)
  • New Review of my Book

Back in Stock

We've added Guaicwood and African Muhuhu to our Woodlover's Sampler Kit. Autumn seems the perfect time of year to enjoy the deep notes of the various wood oils, and this is your chance to experience all of them at a special savings.   Our new Lavender Mailette Hydrosol is a sweetly scented delight. All the skincare and childcare benefits of Lavender water, and the most floral scent of any Lavender distillate we have encountered.    Baby Bottom Balm is the one product my daughter's in law will not be without.  Snag some for your baby, or grandbaby, and you'll understand why.  A summer of barefeet or sandals can leave our feet in less than picture perfect shape.  Our "Satin Soles" kit contains all you need to leave your feet polished and smooth.

New Products

New Clarifying Toner - a mild astringent for oily or combination skin, with a wonderfully clean herbal unisex aroma.  T snagged our first samples of this new toner for her grandson.  His sister and mom loved it too, and she begged me to share it with all of you. "It's too good just to keep for us!"

Morning Sickness - we've talked about remedies for this plague for years.  Finally, after consultation with our nurse-mentors, we are delighted to introduce "Happy Morning"...both the undiluted synergy and a special inhaler.

Magdalene's Anoint - not long ago we were contacted by a local church.  The client wanted to order perfume vials, to gift the ladies of the church with "Mary's Oil"   They were talking about using Baby Oil...  had no idea of what other options are available.  Inspiration struck, and Magdalene's Anoint was borne.  A blend of sacred Frankincense, Rose Otto - the ultimate woman's healing oil, and Spikenard - oil of peace, forgiveness, and self forgiveness.  We don't know if the ladies of the church loved and appreciated the blend, but we do!  Ideal for any spiritual work that involves the need for forgiveness.

Small Sizes Sale

Atlas Cedarwood, Elemi, and Haitian Vetiver, all poured in sizes we don't normally offer.   Your chance to experience one or all.  (It is truly serendipitous that all seem appropriate oils for Autumn.  We didn't plan that!)

TRICK OR TREAT

Because I can never remember whether Hallowe'en falls on the 30th or the 31st, we are celebrating on both days - or evenings, as the case might be.

From the end of OUR business day (around 4 or 4:30 pm Central Time) on Tuesday October 30th,  until our bedtime (around 10 PM CENTRAL time) on the 31st we will be hosting trick or treat day.

Simply enter "treat" (without the quotation marks) into the box marked Promotional Code, at checkout, press "apply" and receive a discount.  A Halloween surprise discount.  Most of the day (and night) it will be 10% off all your retail purchases.  Sometimes it will be higher. (a real treat!)  Sometimes it will be lower. (It wouldn't be Hallowe'en without some tricks, after all.)  But if you enter  treat  and press apply, you will receive a discount. (If you do not see a discount reflected onscreen, please don't submit the order, we will not be able to apply the discount retroactively.)

(The ghosts and goblins in the packing room just might tuck a surprise treat in some of the goody bags being shipped, so I'm told.)

We *may* send out a special reminder of this sale in the days preceding Hallowe'en...but we may forget, so please save this newsletter so you'll remember!

Book Review

My friend Wendy, of Aromaweb,  recently reviewed my book.

Essential Oils and Aromatics is written by Marge Clark, who is best known as the owner of Nature's Gift as well as for her involvement within the aromatherapy community at large. Marge has actively participated, networked and helped others in an array of online communities/message boards/mailing lists devoted to aromatherapy. Marge has an excellent reputation for her essential oil knowledge and is known for her passionate, unique writing style. Marge has also been an advertiser and supporter of AromaWeb since its beginnings. She was a source of encouragement to me when I originally launched AromaWeb in 1997. Her passion and love of this fields shines through all that she writes on the subject.

Essential Oils and Aromatics is a lovely introductory aromatherapy book, offered in hard cover format. At 96 pages, it provides just enough information on each topic to educate the reader, and compel him or her to learn more about this rich field. Easy to follow recipes are also incorporated throughout the book. If I counted correctly, Essential Oils and Aromatics includes over 55 essential oil profiles. Though the profiles are brief, they provide a helpful overview of each essential oil, including the pertinent information for each. Marge has not skimped on including clear safety warnings in red print for those essential oils that have contraindications. Marge has also included brief information on 16 carrier oils including several that are rarely mentioned in other aromatherapy works.

Essential Oils and Aromatics is an excellent first aromatherapy book and stepping stone towards more detailed and thorough exploration of the many facets of aromatherapy. Its pages can be read in an afternoon or evening, and it will remain a helpful reference for its recipes and profiles.

Thank you, Wendy!

Protect Spring Bulbs

Kristi Kusek recently wrote:

Here's my tip:  Five days after purchasing some very healthy, beautiful bulbs, I noticed that they were already starting to get surface mold on them.  In order to halt the growth and help stop further growth, this is what I did:  I sprayed them with a solution of rubbing alcohol, tea tree, and bergamot mint.  I added the bergamot mint because I remembered it was in an NG fresh air blend that was supposed to be helpful in basements that had moisture issues and because I thought the blend would be more enjoyable to work with than straight tea tree.

Mold B Gone for Bulbs
21d of Tea Tree
21d of Bergamot Mint
Fill rest of 4 oz spray bottle with rubbing alcohol

Process: After spraying and wiping the bulbs down with this mixture, I transferred them to paper bags that had a drop each of tea tree and bergamot mint straight on the bag.  They are stored in my dry basement, but I figured that the paper bags would help absorb any additional moisture that might bother them.  I just checked on them (10 days after spraying them), and they look GREAT!  No mold at all.  A final note:  I wore a face mask while cleaning the bulbs, just to be safe from airborne mold spores. The spray helps to keep them down though.  I'm highly allergic to mold and didn't sneeze at all while using the oils on those moldy guys.

Of course, it's always nice if you can get the bulbs in the ground right after you buy them, but the weather hasn't cooperated when my schedule has allowed me the time to do so. This idea seemed like the next best thing, and I'm proud to say that it is working!  I want to be sure that I note that this was SURFACE mold, and not the stuff that has already started to degrade the bulb itself so your mileage may vary depending on the progression of the mold growth.

Thanks for sharing that one, Kristi...I'd not have thought of it!  (Which reminds me...time to find more Daffodil bulbs and a corner to plant them!

Monster Spray Upgrade

Lots of mom's use Lavender Hydrosol as a "monster under the bed or in the closet" spray, to help their young'uns sleep.  Somewhere I came across a suggestion I loved (and forgot the source!)...  put the hydrosol in a squirt gun, and let the young'un shoot the monsters.  The thought of this one makes me grin.

Bruises and abrasions

A friend was cutting down a dead tree, and part of it fell in the wrong direction.  He was very lucky...saw it coming and was bent over and running when it hit him. (Had he been standing upright, it could have broken his neck, back, shoulder...something.)  As it was,  the skin on his back was shredded - just surface abrasions, but his back looked like a piece of raw meat.  I reached for our Sunburn Soother - a blend of Aloe and Jojoba, with Helichrysum, Lavender and German Chamomile.  (It was what I had on hand!) By the next morning, the scrapes were healed over, and within 48 hours he was left with only a few thin pink lines - traces of that nasty scrape.

Safer Driving

Some time ago Marie Helene shared a clipping she found in a Japanese engineering publication:

Effects of aroma of trees on active safety during car driving
Suzuki, Keisuke (Department of Mechanical Engineering, Daido Institute of Technology); Yasuda, Masashi; Sassa, Yukiya; Harada, Shigeki Source: Nihon Kikai Gakkai Ronbunshu, C Hen/Transactions of the Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers, Part C, v 72, n 11, November, 2006,  p 3584-3592 Language: Japanese
ISSN: 0387-5024 CODEN: NKCHDB
Publisher: Japan Society of Mechanical Engineers
Abstract:  We investigated the effects of aroma of trees (air supplement) on active safety during car driving in a driving simulator. In this study, we mainly analyzed the fluctuation of driver's pulse with respect to fatigue level and sleepiness level, reaction time to visual stimulus, and vehicle maneuver such as the fluctuation of time margin to the preceding vehicle. We clarified that Alfa-pinene which is one of aroma of trees is useful to minimize the fatigue level of drivers and to keep the safety time margin to the preceding vehicle. .... It was revealed that the air supplement is useful as a device of active safety during car driving.

All of which indicates that your favorite conifer oil would be a wonderful addition to your car-scenter.

Laundry Rinses

Ever since I developed dreadful contact dermatitis all over my body, and was told to NEVER use any fabric softener or softener sheets I have been using White Vinegar in the rinse water to get the last remnants of detergent out of my clothes. (Yes, white vinegar will leave your clothes soft and fluffy, your towels will be soft and much more absorbent. It will not eliminate static cling, though.) A vinegar rinse will remove all traces of soap scum or detergent both from your clothes and from your washing machine.  It is also said to revive the color in dark or brightly colored fabrics.  I recently came across these formulas for scented vinegar as a rinse. Haven't tried any, but thought I would share them.  (I'm tempted to add sandalwood and rose to a "delicate" load, for the ultimate indulgence!)

SCENTED VINEGAR RINSE:

To one liter (or one quart) of white vinegar add 5 ml (one measuring teaspoonful) of essential oil or blend.  Shake well before using, and add 1/2 a cup (4 ounces, 125 ml, or a generous splash (my method) to the rinse water.

BALSAMIC BLEND: (Nice for a man's clothes!)  Equal parts of Eucalyptus, Pine, and Rosemary cineole oils.

MOTH-Be-Gone:  Two parts Eucalyptus Globulous, one part each Lemon Tea Tree and Peppermint

PEACEFUL NIGHT:  Two parts Lavender, one part Rose Geranium

Please note - I love the scent of citrus oils, but the cold pressed citrus may discolor clothing.  I'd limit these experiments to clear essential oils, not deeply colored ones.

WOW...   Most of the 'anti-acne' products are a bit too drying for mature skin, so this is wonderful feedback. Thanks for giving me permission to quote you, Cindy!

(when I wrote and asked for permission to share this, she replied:)

Yes, I would love for others to hear of my results!  Ever since I started to notice that my blemishes were healing and no new ones were in sight a couple of days ago, I've been wanting to share it with anyone who would listen!  I know everyone skin reacts different and not everyone may experience the same results but I feel it's definiltey worth trying.

I look forward to trying out some more of your awesome products real soon!

Muscle Fatigue Blend and other results

Janell Danitschek shared the following some time ago, and I forgot to mention it:

"I have also finally conquered the tiredness in my hands.  Since I type so much at work, by the end of the day my hands felt like they were about to fall off; but not anymore.  The Marula is the base oil and it has 6 drops of Eucalyptus smithii, 8 drops of Marjoram and 6 drops of Ginger. [my note: this would be to one ounce of Marula] I put a drop or two on my hands once a day and it seems to solve the problem.  I know that sounds strong, but it is only 3.23 percent dilution.  (using the spreadsheet I found at the Agora website, makes it really easy to calculate dilutions) and it only goes on my hands once a day; so I don't think that two drops a day will hurt me.  In fact my hands are now so much better that I can work all day and type in the evening, not possible just a few weeks ago. I have even been able to step wearing my support gloves all the time.

The Burnout and Benzoin have been most helpful.  I have finally found something that will make my fiance sleepy and it seems to be anything with a certain amount of Benzoin.  If he is stressed out, I use the Burnout and it seems to relax him to where he will sleep."

Thanks for sharing all this, Janell!!!

Aromatic Quotes for October:

Viewing the Mid-Autumn Moon
In the moonlit courtyard crows are nesting in the trees;
Osmanthus flowers soundlessly are dampened by the dew.
Tonight's the night that all will view the brightness of the moon:
Upon whose homes will autumn sadness linger.

                        Wang Jian

Change is a measure of time and, in the autumn, time seems speeded up. What was is not and never again will be; what is is change.
--Edwin Way Teale

Youth is like spring, an over- praised season more remarkable for biting winds than genial breezes. Autumn is the mellower season, and what we lose in flowers we more than gain in fruits.
--Samuel Butler

May your Autumn be fruitful!
