Helichrysum Essential Oils

Nature's Gift offers certified organic steam distilled Helichrysum italicuum grown and distilled in Corsica.  We offer both the pure, undiluted Helichrysum essential oil, and, for safety, convenience, and affordability, a 10% dilution in your choice of Jojoba and Rose Hip Seed Oil

We also offer the solvent extracted Immortelle Absolute, sometimes called Everlast, much prized by perfumers, although lacking the healing qualities of true distilled Helichrysum Essential Oil.   To add to the collection we have imported some new (or new to us!) varieties of the Helichrysum family native to South Africa.

(Italian Everlasting, Immortelle) Helichrysum Italicum ssp Serotinum,  Corsica, Certified Organic, blossoms

scarring and  inflammed skin

(Italian Everlasting, Immortelle) Helichrysum Italicum (Roth) G. Don ,  Macedonia, Certified Organic, blossoms

pain, bruising and inflammation

You may see the analysis of this batch of Corsican Helichrysum here.  The Balkan Helichrysum's analysis is here.

Helichrysum  Corsican Traditional

(Italian Everlasting, Immortelle) Helichrysum Italicum ssp Serotinum Corsica, Certified Organic, blossoms

Our classic traditionally distilled (in copper stills) from the Island of Corsica.   This has been our standby healing oil for years now, and is the essential oil usually referred to on our Helichrysum Healing page.

We recommend the Corsican oil specifically for healing surgical and burn scars (diluted in cold pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil) and to ease the pain and discoloration of bruises.  Franchomme & Penoel say that this oil is the most powerful antihematoma oil in the world

Helichrysum Balkans

(Italian Everlasting, Immortelle) Helichrysum Italicum (Roth) G. Don ,  Macedonia, Certified Organic, blossoms

The components of the Balkan oil give it a softer and sweeter aroma than that of the Corsican oil, and make it ideal for treating pain and inflammation.  We are using it in our "That's Better" and Miracle Oil.  It is the more affordable alternative to choose for pain and inflammation.

HELICHRYSUM Balkan 10% in organic Jojoba Oil

This would be my choice for pain relief, for bruising, inflammation, etc.

HELICHRYSUM Corsica 10% in Rose Hip Seed Oil

Our lovely organic Traditional Helichrysum in a 10% dilution in Jojoba. Use for skincare, for treating injuries, or for inhalation. Also offered in Rose Hip Seed Oil, the scar healing synergy suggested by Kurt Schaubelt and Dr. Christoph Striecher. Several of our friends and customers have seen great results from using the Helichrysum in Rose Hip Oil. However, Rose Hip Seed Oil can cause break outs on acne prone skin. If you have acne prone skin, it's best to avoid using the Rose Hip, or test it on a very small area of your face to see if there is a reaction. Please note, Rose Hip Seed is a very shortlived carrier oil.  If purchasing the Helichrysum diluted in Rose Hip Oil, please store it under refrigeration to preserve freshness.

We are offering the Corsican Helichrysum in Rose Hip Seed oil in a 10ml Roller Ball bottle for the first time this year.  I was applying a bit to a tiny scar, and realized how much easier a roller ball would be for applying to a scar or a tiny bruise.

Physical Effects of Helichrysum italicuum Essential Oil

The steam distilled oil of the Italian Everlasting is one of the strongest anti-inflammatories I know.  The fragrance is warm, slightly honey like, rich and buttery, with green notes of wood, spices, herb. It is a fascinating oil because it is made up of several layers of notes that appear to unfold during the dry down.

The literature and the aromatherapy lists are full of anecdotal evidence of Helichrysum Italicuum Essential Oil's amazing power when used on broken bones , stories of doctors being amazed that the break healed in half the estimated time, etc.

My personal experience is that it can fade bruises almost overnight, turning an angry new bruise to one that looks like a week old almost healed bruise while I slept. It acts by having the blood reabsorbed into the tissue, thus removing the discoloration and the pain caused by pressure on the nerves.  For this effect, I would reach for the Corsican oil.

According to Jennifer Peace Rhind it is the italidiones in Corsican Helichrysum that give it the anti-hematomic qualities, and make it so effective for bruising and soft tissue trauma.  The Neryl acetate in Corsican Helichrysum is what gives this oil its amazing skin healing and scar healing   It is the Curcurmides in Helichrysum italicuum that make it such an effective pain reliever.

According to Dr. Christoph Streicher, Helichrysum Essential Oil is useful in treating heart palpitations, irregular heartbeat and risk of stroke. Blended with Ylang Ylang it is useful in treating high blood pressure. Dr. Streicher, along with many other authorities, also states that Helichrysum, in a base of Rose Hip Seed Oil will fade scars

Valerie Worwood recommends Helichrysum for rebuilding a weakened immune system.

Any blend created for arthritis, bruising, or scarring needs Helichrysum Essential Oil. One client writes that it is very effective in easing the pain of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome. She applies a weak dilution when the pain starts, and within about 10 minutes the pain is gone for hours. (Not sure that relieving the pain and continuing the same activities that caused the pain is wise, but that is a matter of personal choice.)  For this sort of pain relief, I reach for the Macedonian oil - our Helichrysum Balkans.

Helichrysum in Skincare.

Helichrysum Essential Oil is antibacterial, anti-viral and anti-fungal . It is a component of our anti-acne and rosacea blends, as well as useful in any rash or skin irritation (blended with German Chamomile CO 2 it gives amazing results!).

Corsican Helichrysum is a key ingredient in our Sunburn Soother (blended with Lavender and Chamomile essential oils.)

Emotional Effects of Helichrysum

Mentally, it is very supportive and comforting. It is believed by some to open the right side of the brain and improve creativity as well as increase dream activity. I also use it in a meditation blend to encourage spirituality and personal growth.

Again, according to Dr. Streicher, emotionally it can help an individual get in touch with unresolved feelings, emotions that have been denied and/or buried. It is also helpful in restoring memories that have been buried deep in the past. Dr. Streicher recommends it in psychotherapy to aid a patient in dealing with emotions. It helps release defense mechanisms and offers comfort in processing these emotional traumas.

A client who is a psychotherapist uses a blend of Helichrysum and Jasmine Sambac Absolute for helping her clients deal with their pasts.

Helichrysum Essential Oil can have very profound spiritual and emotional effects .It is considered by some to be one of the 'sacred' oils.

BLENDS WITH: Boronia, Chamomile, all Citrus oils, Clary Sage, Clove, Cypress, Geranium, Lavender, Mimosa, Neroli, Oakmoss, Patchouli, Rose, and Vetiver.

CAPE HELICHRYSUM (Helichrysum crispum)

Wildcrafted in South Africa, distilled from blossoms

Just introduced by our favorite South African supplier, this wildcrafted native African herb has been used in indigenous medicine for millenia.   The flowers and leaves of "Cape Helichrysum" have been used as an anti-inflammatory, to ease the pain of sunburn and other skin irritations.  The producer says that the oil is calming and relaxing when inhaled,  has deoderant properties, and is an effective insect repellant.  It is said to be anti-infectious and the producer suggests that it could lower high blood pressure.  It is also said to relieve the pain associated with Arthritis.

It's main consituents are  Alpha pinene, Sabinene, Beta Pinene, Myrcene, Para cymene, 1.8 Cineole, Beta caryophyllene, Delta cadinene, and Viridiflorol.

We only bought in a little bit to experiment with. This oil is new to all of us so although as a rule the oils of the Helichrysum species are among the most healing and safe in the world, I plan to approach this new specimen with caution, using it in proper dilution, etc.

Helichrysum gymnocephalum

Wildcrafted from South Africa

A powerful respiratory oil, this variety of Helichrysum has little or nothing in common with our more familiar Helichrysum italicuum.

Helichrysum gymnocepalum is said to be analgesic, antibacterial, anti-infectious , anti-inflammatory, antimalarial, antiseptic, antiviral, decongestant, expectorant, immunostimulant, mucolytic, and tonic for the nervous system.  Its major component is 1.8 cineole...as much as is found in many Eucalyptus oils.  It also contains  α-pinene and β-pinene. α-pinene is anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, antispasmodic, antiviral and anti-fungal (candida).  β-Pinene is found to be a potent scavenger of free radicals.  This combination should also make it a valuable addition to topicl pain relief blends.

Aromatically, Helichrysum gymnocephalum is reminscent of a softer, gentler Eucalyptus globulous.  I prefer it aromatically and think it would be a nice choice for a diffuser.  I plan to try blending it with Fragonia for respiratory support,  and with Eucalyptus staigeriana to clear the air.

I think it will be a marvelous oil to reach for when a sinus headache or tension headache strikes, as well.

Helichrysum gymnocephalum is said to blend well with cedarwood, frankincense, geranium, lavender, myrrh, patchouli, sandalwood, and vetiver essential oils

Helichrysum italicum var. picardii, (Roth) G.Don.F.Boiss. et Reuter  grown in Spain, solvent extracted by a master perfumer.

This is NOT the healing Helichrysum oil from Corsica that is the most healing essential oil that I know of, please do not order it expecting the anti-inflammatory effects that you can expect from Corsican Helichrysum. It should not be ordered for physically therapeutic benefits.

What it IS is a marvelous gift to the perfumer!

Thick and slow-moving, this golden brown absolute contains one of the most complex aromas we have encountered in years.  Not light or floral, it reminds us of Oakmoss, of Tabac, traces of Hay Absolute, of the deeply rooted oils that many of us love.

Arctander writes of this amazingly aromatic absolute:

"Its odor is entirely different from that of the essential oil...It is intensely sweet-herbacious, coumarinic, honeylike, slightly woody-floral... (It) is used in perfumery for its deep-sweet, honeylike, tobacco-like notes, and for its great fixative effect...the absolute has an extra-ordinary ability of rounding off and "bouquetting" a fragrance which may need life and naturalness." Said to blend well with the coumarins, lavender family, Clary sage, all citrus oils, the "rosey" oils, clove and other spices.

The undiluted absolute is extremely thick and will definitely require gentle heating to blend with your chosen carrier oil.  It did dissolve readily, when warmed, in our Fractionated Coconut Oil. Available both undiluted, and in a 10% dilution for ease of use.

Helichrysum Recipes:

Sunburn Soother:

Combine equal parts aloe vera gel and jojoba oil.  To one ounce of this base, add 5 drops each high altitude lavender, helichrysum italicuum, and german chamomile essential oils.  Mist onto burned area, for pain relief and faster healing.

Banish Pain

For sore, aching joints blend together 15 drops Helichrysum Italicuum, 10 drops Lavandin abrialis, and five drops Black Pepper Essential Oils.  Dilute in one ounce of carrier oil, apply topically. (Effect is intensified when blended in a base of St. John's Wort Infused Oil, a powerful anti-inflammatory on its own.)
