  Hemp Seed Oil
Cannabis sativa, Hemp Seed Oil. Virgin, Organic, Cold Pressed from Seeds, Unrefined, Filtered.

Due to demand we've brought in a small amount of Hemp Seed oil for blending, skin and hair care. We've not offered this highly unsaturated oil before, as it has a shorter shelf life than some carrier oils. (3-6 months) It is best kept refrigerated, much like Rose Hip Seed oil, to extend shelf life.  If you plan to blend with it for pain relief or skincare, make sure you intend to use the blend immediately and often so the oil will not turn rancid.

That is worth all of the extra care!  Thick and deep dark green, similar in appearance to our unrefined Virgin Avocado oil with a slightly nutty aroma. Abundant in essential proteins and polyunsaturated fatty acids, as well as Omega 3 and 6.  Moisturizing with satisfying skin absorption...not the quickest but not the slowest either.  It is rich, smoothing, and soothing.  I like it!  I love it!  Thinking it will be fabulous in a blend with other carrier oils for haggard winter skin.  I also want to experiment with it as a base for a joint pain relief blend.  Maybe Hemp and our unrefined Avocado as the carriers?  Just thinking aloud...

Hemp seed oil is a handy moisturizer to store in your beauty arsenal because it is beneficial in so many different ways.  Soothing after a sunburn.  Conditioner for damaged or brittle hair.  Improving sebum production and skin elasticity.  As part of a blend for muscle or joint pain.  Easing problematic skin conditions such as dermatitis, eczema, psorasis. For minor burns or scrapes.

Hemp Seed oil has an interesting and unusual fatty acid (lipids) profile. According to author and educator Susan Parker in The Power of the Seed, "Its fatty acid makeup provides a good balance of the essential fatty acids, omega-6 linoleic (55%) and omega-3 alpha-linolenic (20%), with a ratio of 3 to 1, an especially balanced composition."  She goes on to say that Hemp oil also contains "unusual and hard to find" polyunsaturated fatty acids such as GLA (gamma linolenic acid) and SDA (stearidonic acid).  Why is this important?  GLA is a known anti-inflammatory which could be helpful in pain, bruising, trauma, or inflammed skin blends.  SDA is said to help improve eczema, psoriasis, atopic dermatitis and other problematic skin conditions which can be hard to treat.

Jan Kusmirek in Liquid Sunshine suggests Hemp Seed oil as a hair conditioner in combination with Jojoba oil.  He advises,"...massaging in and leaving on for an hour prior to washing out might be practical, especially for those with weak and tired, heat or perm damaged hair..."  He also recommends massaging into the nail bed for "stronger and growing nails."

All in all we are pleased to offer this Virgin and Unrefined oil and we would love your feedback.

Please note:  Hemp Seed Oil does not contain any psychotropic substances such as THC.  It may contain beta caryophyllene which is anti-inflammatory and analgesic. Keep away from heat and from light exposure or frequent temperature change.  Refrigeration is recommended.  Shelf life under refrigeration estimated at 3-6 months.  Hemp oil is the perfect example of a carrier that may benefit from the addition of either a few drops of Vitamin E, or even 0.02% of our Rosemary Anti-oxidant. (That would be one drop per 4 fl oz.)

Blending with very long lived fixed oils might extend its shelf life, as suggested above in the blend with Jojoba.

For decades, I have made rosehip seed oil my favorite oil for everything. I now have a new top favorite: hemp seed oil. My hair and skin loves this stuff. Well done, Marge!
